MUMBAI, India, Aug. 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641098502 A) filed by Cvr College Of Engineering on August 14, 2026, for Phala-Shaka Anvikshana: Smart Fruit And Vegetable Spoilage Detection Using Gabor-Cnn And Raspberry Pi..

Inventors include Dr. Parimi Hema Sree; and Dr. Dhruva R. Rinku.

The application for the patent was published on August 21, 2026, under issue no. 34/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated spoilage detection system for perishable food items, particularly fruits and vegetables, using a Gabor-based deep neural network implemented on an embedded platform. The system includes an image acquisition module for capturing food images, a preprocessing unit for image enhancement and normalization, and a classification module based on a Gabor-integrated Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN). Gabor filters incorporated into the initial convolutional layers enhance texture feature extraction, enabling accurate detection of surface defects, discoloration, bruises, and decay. The system is deployed on a Raspberry Pi 4, providing a low-cost, portable, and real-time solution. The trained model performs food-type recognition followed by freshness classification. Results are displayed through an external interface for user interpretation. The invention improves detection accuracy, reduces reliance on manual inspection, minimizes post-harvest losses, and supports applications in agriculture, food processing, supply chain management, and retail quality control.
