Abstract: The present invention provides a pH-responsive fluorescent nanocomposite film (PVA–CD film) for visual detection of food spoilage. The film comprises a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymer matrix incorporated with carbon dots (CDs) green-synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of dried Phaleria macrocarpa fruit. The CDs exhibit excitation-dependent photoluminescence and pH-sensitive fluorescence intensity, attributed to oxygenated surface functional groups. The PVA–CD film displays a linear increase in photoluminescence intensity over the pH range of 2 to 10. When brought into contact with a food sample, the film functions as a solid-state optical pH probe: a decrease in pH associated with food spoilage produces a measurable and visually observable decrease in fluorescence intensity under UV illumination. Practical applicability is demonstrated for milk spoilage detection, where the film exhibits a fluorescence decrease correlated with progressive acidification of milk during storage. The film may be deployed as a disposable dip strip, a food-packaging indicator, or a component of a semi-quantitative colorimetric kit. The invention provides a low-cost, eco-friendly, and easily interpretable alternative to conventional food quality assessment methods, valorising agricultural fruit waste as a functional sensing material.
