MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641103835 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology on August 28, 2026, for Performance Improvement Of Zig-Zag Shaped Heat Exchanger.

Inventors include Dr. R. Sathiyamoorthi; Keerthana P P; Jency Esther R; and Joel Thanasingh S.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: Title: PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT OF ZIG-ZAG SHAPED HEAT EXCHANGER The titled invention discloses a zig-zag shaped heat exchanger comprising a zig-zag flow channel (1) and a heat exchanger body (2). The zig-zag flow channel (1) comprises periodic angular bends configured to repeatedly change the direction of fluid flow, thereby increasing turbulence, disrupting boundary layer formation, and increasing the effective heat transfer area. The arrangement improves the heat 10 transfer coefficient and heat transfer performance while considering the pressure drop generated by the modified flow path. The bend angle, bend pitch, channel dimensions, cross-sectional area, Reynolds number, and inlet temperature are considered for obtaining suitable thermal-hydraulic performance. The heat exchanger body (2) is fabricated using stainless steel Grade 304 or equivalent material and can operate with 15 different working fluids and flow arrangements. The arrangement provides a compact heat transfer configuration suitable for refrigeration, HVAC systems, power generation, chemical processing, and transportation applications.
