Abstract: ABSTRACT Performance Characteristics and Treatment Efficiency in Dairy Industry The dairy industry is one of the largest agro-based sectors, playing a vital role in food production, economic development, and rural employment. Despite its importance, dairy processing operations generate significant quantities of wastewater during activities such as milk reception, pasteurization, equipment cleaning, and product handling. This wastewater is characterized by high concentrations of organic matter, including fats, proteins, lactose, detergents, and suspended solids, which can lead to serious environmental pollution if discharged without proper treatment. The present study aims to analyze the characteristics of dairy wastewater and evaluate effective treatment methods to ensure safe disposal and sustainability. Wastewater samples were collected from dairy processing units and analyzed for key physico-chemical parameters such as pH, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and fat content. The results revealed that the effluent possesses high organic load and exceeds the permissible limits prescribed by regulatory bodies such as BIS and FSSAI. This indicates a strong need for efficient wastewater management systems. Based on the findings, a suitable treatment process has been proposed, incorporating primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment methods to reduce pollutant levels effectively. Advanced treatment technologies such as membrane filtration and biological processes are also discussed for improved efficiency. The study further highlights the importance of sludge management, water reuse, and energy recovery through biogas generation. Overall, this project emphasizes the need for sustainable wastewater treatment practices in the dairy industry to minimize environmental impact, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote resource conservation.
