MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641072076 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 10, 2026, for Passive Thermomechanical Solar Tracking System.
Inventors include Lalit Bansal; Alwin Eldos Bettyn; and Tarun Vijay.
The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.
Abstract: A passive thermomechanical solar tracking system (100) is provided. The passive thermomechanical solar tracking system (100) includes a solar collector assembly comprising a solar radiation concentrator (108), a receiver SMA housing (104), a thermomechanical actuator comprising at least one shape memory alloy element (404), a linear actuation member comprising a connecting shaft (610), a motion transmission assembly disposed within a tracking mechanism housing (106), a directional rectification mechanism (606), an energy storage and controlled release mechanism, a passive reset mechanism comprising a weight bias (908), and a support structure comprising a stand assembly (110). The thermomechanical actuator is configured to generate reciprocating linear displacement in response to concentrated solar radiation, which is converted into rotary motion for angular displacement of a photovoltaic panel assembly (102). During operation, the passive thermomechanical solar tracking system (100) autonomously tracks solar movement and automatically resets the photovoltaic panel assembly (102) without requiring external electrical power for actuation.
