MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511113556 A) filed by Dr Zubair Rashid on November 19, 2025, for Passive Structural Fuse Mechanism For Enhanced Failure Control In Post-Tensioned Concrete Systems.

Inventors include Nangallage Dilum Fernando; Miguel Angel Puente Hervella; Mir Basar Suhaib; and Dr Zubair Rashid.

The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.

Abstract: This invention introduces a passive, replaceable structural fuse for post-tensioned concrete members. The fuse is a calibrated sacrificial element placed concentrically in the tendon load path at an anchorage, inside a coupling, or within the span and it activates before the prestressed tendon or surrounding concrete is damaged in case of an overload. Activation of the fuse is controlled by the geometry and material of the fuse and occurs at a predetermined percentage of the tendon capacity, resulting in stable, ductile deformation that stays confined to a small, accessible zone. The apparatus can be instrumented with simple sensors like strain gauges to provide data regarding the activation and subsequent replacement of the fuse. The fuse can be standardised into size ranges and shapes for common anchorage systems, integrated with low-cost sensors for condition-based maintenance and monitoring and can be linked to digital-twin models for reliability assessment. The idea suits both new construction as well as retrofitting and rehabilitation of post tensioned structural components in bridges, buildings and slabs
