Abstract: The present invention discloses a passive material passport composite spacer (100) for battery modules, configured to provide mechanical support, electrical insulation, thermal isolation, and passive structural health assessment. The composite spacer comprises a structural and insulation layer (110), a mechanical-memory and conductive-sensing layer (120), and a thermal barrier layer (130). The mechanical-memory and conductive-sensing layer incorporates a conductive percolation network dispersed within a reinforced bio-derived vitrimer matrix. During service, cumulative compressive loading progressively modifies the conductive network, producing measurable electrical impedance variations that permanently represent the mechanical loading history of the spacer. The impedance is measured externally through electrode contact locations using an impedance analyzer or LCR meter without embedded sensors, batteries, wireless communication devices, or active electronic circuitry. The measured impedance is correlated with predefined degradation states to estimate the remaining service life of the spacer and support decisions relating to continued use, remanufacturing, or recycling. The invention enables rapid, non-destructive condition assessment while maintaining the structural, electrical, and thermal functions required for battery modules, thereby improving maintenance planning, lifecycle management, and sustainability of electric vehicle and stationary energy storage battery systems.
