MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611096070 A) filed by Chandigarh University on August 08, 2026, for Passive Heat-Triggered Mechanical Actuator For Automatic Shut-Off And Locking Of Domestic Lpg Regulators.
Inventors include Kush Kumar; and Khushi Singh.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses a passive, non-electronic mechanical safety device for domestic LPG regulators that automatically shuts off gas supply during thermal emergencies. The device comprises a multi-stage thermal-mechanical actuation system including a bimetallic warning element for generating an early audible alert and a thermally responsive actuator, preferably a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) or bimetallic actuator, configured to activate a high-torque mechanical transmission. The transmission converts thermal expansion into rotary motion, enabling a torque arm to rotate the regulator knob approximately 90° from the ON position to the OFF position, thereby terminating gas flow at the source. A ratchet-and-pawl locking mechanism maintains the regulator in the OFF position until intentionally released through a manual reset. The device further incorporates an anti-tamper mechanism, thermal shielding, and a universal retrofit mounting arrangement, providing reliable, maintenance-free, battery-independent protection against LPG-related fires and explosions.
