MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641105187 A) filed by Ramco Institute Of Technology on September 01, 2026, for Passive Dry-Spell-Responsive Variable-Volume First-Flush Diverter For Rainwater Harvesting Systems.

Inventors include Dr. M. Kaliappan; Dr. C. Karpagavalli; Ms. B. Anitha; Ms. V. Logapriya; and Ms. K. Dhanalakshmi.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: A passive self-adjusting first-flush diverter for rainwater harvesting, systems automatically adjust the amount of diverted contaminated water according to the length of the dry period that occurred before the flush with no electricity, batteries, sensors or software. The apparatus consists of a rainwater inlet [1] a first-flush chamber [2] of variable volume with a movable partition [3], a hygroscopic memory cartridge [4] which is exposed to ambient air through a membrane [5] which is permeable to water but not to the airborne water droplets, a mechanical transmission [6] for moving the partition in response to the movement of the hygroscopic memory cartridge [4], a rain-onset latch [7] for closing the partition at the beginning of the rain, a rainwater outlet [10] connected to the prehydrated water tank [11] by a rainwater diversion valve [8] controlled by a float, and a rainwater return passage [9] which allows the rainwater to rehydrate the hygroscopic memory cartridge [4] after the latch operation. When the rain falls, the latch would keep the setting, and during the dry spell, the cartridge would swell up and increase the capacity of the chamber. Climate calibrated interchangeable cartridges allow use in a variety of environments.
