Abstract: Ladakh traditional shoes called ‘Papu’ are designed to be used in a manner that is uniquely adapted to the landscape and weather conditions of the region. Papu shoes are made up of woven yak hair or wool with a sole of yak leather to keep their feet warm in the cold weather of the region. The Papu shoes are presently made by hand and there is no significant sizing system followed in the making process. The instant invention aims at addressing and streamlining the process of making the Papu shoes in a much faster manner with an appropriate sizing system using last. The last has been developed in two parts using a combination of thermostat vacuum forming & conventional last-making process. The back part (heel curve) to the ball girth and the mid-vamp part of the last is made by the conventional last making process. The second part is the scoop/curved toe which is made using a thermostat vacuum forming technique for maintaining the authenticity of the shoe and its comfort. This was done due to the complexity of making one part last for making the intricate shapes and for ease of operation. The traditional knowledge of Papu shoe making is very limited to close a group of people in the Ladakh region, thus the Invention makes an attempt to adopt the modern techniques of footwear manufacturing and exposure of the craft to wider people.
