MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202521103905 A) filed by Iitb-Monash Research Academy on October 28, 2025, for P2-Structured Sodium-Transition Metal Oxide Based Cathode Active Material For Sodium Ion Batteries.

Inventors include Brijesh; and Amartya Mukhopadhyay.

The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a cathode active material for Na-ion batteries, comprising a sodium transition metal oxide having a P2-type layered structure belonging to a space group of P63/mmc. The sodium transition metal oxide has a composition represented by the general formula Nax-TM-O2. The TM comprises a combination of at least one transition metal and a non-transition metal selected from Lithium(Li), Magnesium (Mg), Nickel (Ni), and Manganese (Mn). The cathode active materials of the present disclosure are industrially applicable as a cathode electrode in sodium-ion batteries, particularly for grid-scale energy storage systems, low-cost stationery storage solutions, electrode processing/handling in ambient conditions, backup and renewable energy storage platforms. The cathode active material of the present disclosure exhibits enhanced environmental stability, electrochemical stability, possessing high energy-cum-power density thereby allowing ambient processing, handling and storage.
