Abstract: ABSTRACT OPTIMIZING CORE-SHELL CATHODE POWDERS FOR SOFC APPLICATIONS The invention relates to solid oxide cells (SOCs) and provides a cathode material comprising a core-shell structured powder designed to enhance electrochemical performance and compatibility with zirconia-based electrolytes. The core comprises a perovskite-based oxide ceramic providing structural integrity and electronic conductivity, while the shell comprises at least one oxide material selected from lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF), lanthanides-doped ceria, or zirconia stabilized with Group III elements to enhance ionic or mixed ionic-electronic conductivity and oxygen reduction reaction kinetics. The cathode material further includes a zirconia-based surface modification, preferably yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia, applied as a nanoporous coating to improve chemical and thermal compatibility with zirconia electrolytes and to suppress interfacial degradation. The core- shell cathode material is prepared using combustion synthesis or spray pyrolysis followed by zirconia-based surface functionalization and is suitable for use in solid oxide fuel cells and solid oxide electrolyser cells, providing improved durability and operational stability over a wide temperature range.
