Abstract: Phlorotannins are polyphenols uniquely obtained from brown algae, known for then. nutraceutical properties, and have the challenges of degradation and low bioavailability. Th current invention focused on developing Phlorotannin loaded pectin films, investigating the extraction and characterisation of phlorotannin from Canistrocarpus cervicornis, an unexplored brown seaweed, and using commercial pectin. Phlorotannin extracted usin conventional solid-liquid extraction at varying ethanol concentrations (20%, 40%, 60%) was assessed for the Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and Total Phlorotannin Content (TPhC) of thel extracts using the Folin- Ciocalteu assay. The dried extract powders were subjected to analytical techniques, including NMR and LC-MS, to elucidate their structurall characteristics and identify key components. The commercial pectin at varyini , concentrations was subsequently used to prepare films, incorporating glycerol as a plasticizer' and calcium chloride for crosslinking and phlorotannin was loaded into the films. The I developed films were characterised using FTIR, XRD, and AFM. The synthesis of a film incorporating phlorotannin, a bioproduct derived from algae, combined with pectin, a plantbased polysaccharide, represents a novel formulation that has not been previously reportedi n the literature.
