MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541028342 A) filed by Ciena Corporation on March 26, 2025, for Optimized Mpls Label Allocation For Bgp L3vpn Route Reflectors.

Inventors include Param Preet Dhillon; Piyush Sharma; Varun Munjal; and Anil Dharmshaktu.

The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: In large-scale BGP L3VPN deployments, inline route reflectors (RRs) (20) often exhaust their MPLS label capacity when each prefix requires a unique label. This disclosure introduces a per-flow label allocation technique that groups prefixes sharing the same forwarding attributes (e.g., out label, next-hop, backup label, backup next hop) under a single label. By consolidating routes with identical flow characteristics, the inline RR (20) cuts label usage, enabling cost-sensitive hardware to function effectively as RRs. Once all prefixes in a flow are withdrawn, their allocated label is released, further optimizing label utilization. Extensible to VPNv4/VPNv6 and other address families such as EVPN and MVPN, this method (100) substantially improves scalability and performance while easing hardware resource demands in modern VPN networks.
