Abstract: ABSTRACT OPTIMIZED BRAKING FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES Example approaches for optimizing braking performance in a vehicle (104) are described. A control unit (122, 200) of the vehicle (104) receives sensor data from a plurality of sensors associated with the vehicle (104) and 5 identifies a situation ahead of the vehicle (104) based on the sensor data. The situation may include a traffic signal, a stationary obstacle, or a leading vehicle. The control unit (122, 200) calculates a stopping distance for the vehicle (104) to address the identified situation based on a pre-defined regenerative braking deceleration limit of the vehicle (104). The stopping distance is compared with 10 an available distance corresponding to the situation. Based on the comparison, a vehicle control strategy is selectively applied. The vehicle control strategy includes one of applying regenerative braking, applying a combination of friction braking and regenerative braking, or maintaining a current speed of the vehicle. 15
