Abstract: ABSTRACT OPTIMIZATION OF LOCALIZED HEATING IN A SHRUNK FIT GEAR AND SHAFT ASSEMBLY FOR EFFORTLESS DISMANTLING The controlled localized heating is essential in various manufacturing scenarios viz. dismantling shrunk fit components; to prevent issues such as excessive plastic deformation, overheating of case-hardened zones, unwanted phase transformations. Traditionally, methods rely on iterative experiments based on prior experience and surface temperature monitoring; however, these approaches fail to capture sub-surface temperature distributions that contribute to thermal stress. Additionally, not all components allow for iterative trials without risking adverse outcomes. To address these challenges, the present method employs the finite element (FE) method to simulate localized heating, enabling precise control over the heating rate and achieving the desired temperature distribution. This approach minimizes the risk of permanent deformation in shrunk fit components and preserves critical metallurgical properties, such as hardness, ensuring effective dismantling while maintaining structural integrity.
