Abstract: What is disclosed is an optically variable security element for safeguarding of security papers, documents of value and other articles of value, having a substrate body (2) that has a front side (4) and a reverse side (6), and a print layer (8) that has been applied to the front side (4) of the substrate body (2) 10 and contains first pigments (10) and second pigments (12). The first pigments (10) comprise crosslinked cholesteric liquid crystals and create a first colour in a first viewing angle range and are transparent in a second viewing angle range. The second pigments (12) comprise crosslinked cholesteric liquid crystals and create a second, different colour in the second viewing angle range 15 and are transparent in the first viewing angle range, such that the first pigments (10) and the second pigments (12) in combination create a colour flop effect, and a light-absorbing substrate is provided beneath the print layer (8).
