MUMBAI, India, Sept. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641104848 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Madras Iit Madras on August 31, 2026, for Number Plate Color Coding System For Real-Time Classification Of An Automation Level Of A Vehicle.

Inventors include Venkatesh Balasubramanian; Harikrishna Rangam; and Vishal K R.

The application for the patent was published on September 04, 2026, under issue no. 36/2026.

Abstract: The present invention provides a number plate color coding system (100) for classifying the automation capability of a vehicle based on a color-coded license plate. The automation level is encoded into a background color region of the license plate according to a plurality of predefined color profiles corresponding to automation levels L0 through L5. The system (100) comprises a vehicle detection module (110), a license plate localization module (130), and an ADAS level classification module (150), and may further comprise a car parts segmentation module (120), an optical character recognition module (140), and a vehicle body color extraction module (160). The ADAS level classification module (150) determines the automation level using a training-free, deterministic pixel-voting unit (152) operating in the HSV color space, in combination with a spatial gating unit (154) and a glare detection filter (156), thereby providing sub-millisecond processing for reliable identification of the vehicle automation level.
