Inventors include Dr. A. Sukanya; Dr. K. Nagamani; and Dr. A. David Ravindran.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel fermented organic oil cake filtrate-based culture medium and cultivation method for enhanced production of Spirulina platensis. The invention utilizes fermented organic oil cake filtrate derived from agricultural by-products as a sustainable nutrient source for replacing or substantially reducing conventional synthetic culture media. The culture medium is prepared by mixing fermented organic oil cake filtrate with water and sodium bicarbonate to provide essential macro- and micronutrients for algal growth. The cultivation process is carried out under optimized alkaline pH, temperature, illumination, and aeration conditions to promote rapid cell proliferation, increased biomass accumulation, and enhanced biosynthesis of proteins, phycocyanin, chlorophyll, carotenoids, vitamins, and other bioactive compounds. The invention significantly reduces cultivation cost, improves nutrient utilization, and supports agricultural waste valorization. The disclosed culture medium and cultivation method are suitable for laboratory, pilot-scale, and industrial production of Spirulina platensis for nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, aquaculture, biotechnology, and animal feed applications
