Abstract: In orthodontic treatment, arch wires are attached to the brackets by the use of ligature wires. The twisting of ligature wires by hand is a tedious, labor-intensive, and exhausting process. The improper twisting of ligature wires can lead to inefficient tooth movement, pain to the patient, and prolongation of the treatment period. The aim of the proposed project work is to design a Smart Ligature Twisting Device using a microcontroller-based system. In the proposed system, an Arduino Nano microcontroller is used to control the twisting system. A micro DC geared motor is used for controlled rotational motion to twist the ligature wire. A torque measurement system is used to offer equal twisting force. The system also includes a rechargeable battery system and a portable handheld system for easy use in the clinical environment. The proposed system is a costeffective, portable, and precise device for ligature twisting in orthodontic treatment. This automated approach minimizes procedural time, reduces operator fatigue, and improves treatment consistency compared to conventional manual methods. The device is also designed with scalability in mind, allowing future integration of advanced features such as wireless control, data logging, and smart feedback systems. Overall, the Smart Ligature Twisting Device offers a cost-effective, reliable, and user-friendly solution for modern orthodontic practices.
