Abstract: ABSTRACT: Non-Contact Vapor Delivery System for Restoring Fruit-Specific Unripe Defense Metabolites Post-Harvest This invention describes a non-contact, fruit- specific vapor-phase packaging system for post-harvest protection of fruits. The system restores volatile defense metabolites—naturally occurring in unripe fruits but lost during ripening—by emitting controlled, sub-sensory concentrations of species-specific volatiles into the packaging headspace. These metabolites, including terpenoids, aldehydes, green-leaf volatiles, and phenolic compounds, are encapsulated within a stabilizing matrix and released passively to deter insect oviposition and suppress microbial spoilage without contacting the fruit surface. The carrier unit is biodegradable, food-safe, and configured for insertion within standard packaging formats. The vapor-phase emission mimics the unripe-stage biochemical environment, providing behavioral deterrence to pests and airborne antimicrobial action, without leaving chemical residues or altering fruit quality. The system is passive, scalable, and adaptable across multiple stages of the post-harvest supply chain, offering a sustainable and compliant alternative to coatings, fumigants, or synthetic preservatives.
