MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631075683 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Rourkela Nit Rourkela on June 18, 2026, for Nitinol-Based Rotary Actuator And A Method For Generating Rotational Motion.
Inventors include Behera, Prof. Ajit; and Gupta, Mr. Shivam Shyammilan.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a Nitinol-based rotary actuator system (100) and a method (900) for generating rotational motion using thermally activated shape memory alloy spring actuators. The method (900) comprises positioning Nitinol spring actuators (4,5) on opposing sides of a rotary transmission assembly, mechanically coupling the spring wires to a reciprocating motion conversion mechanism comprising a rack and pinion assembly, supplying electrical current to the spring wires to generate Joule heating, causing phase transformation from martensitic phase to austenitic phase and inducing contraction of the activated spring wire. Further, alternating contraction and cooling of opposing spring wires generate reciprocating linear displacement that is converted into continuous cyclic rotary motion.
