MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631061858 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology Rourkela Nit Rourkela on May 15, 2026, for Ni-Cr Containing Medium Manganese Steel For Automotive Applications And Process For Preparation Thereof.

Inventors include Sarkar, Dr. Arnab; Kumar, Mr. Anant; Dutta, Dr. Krishna; and Kumar, Dr. Suman.

The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a Ni-Cr containing medium manganese steel and a process for preparation thereof for automotive applications. The process comprises melting charge materials comprising iron and alloying elements, followed by casting to obtain an as-cast ingot. The ingot is further subjected to homogenising, hot forging, reheating, hot rolling, and annealing with subsequent air cooling. Further, the process results in a single-phase austenitic microstructure with grain refinement and deformation twins. Moreover, the Ni-Cr containing medium manganese steel exhibits a tensile strength of 750–900 MPa, elongation of 30–50%, and a product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 30–45 GPa%. The present invention addresses limitations of high alloying content and complex processing in existing steels by providing a controlled composition and thermomechanical processing route.
