Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a needle felt coir polymer composite and a method for fabricating the same. The composite comprises a needle felt coir composite including waste short coir fibres and long coir fibres, wherein the short and long coir fibres are mechanically entangled through a needle-punching process to form a nonwoven needle felt structure. One or more polymer layers are deposited onto the needle felt coir composite, wherein the polymer penetrates the inter-fibre voids and bonds the short and long coir fibres to form an integrated needle felt coir polymer composite with improved mechanical properties. The method comprises collecting waste short coir fibres, treating the fibres with a base followed by drying, feeding the treated short fibres together with long coir fibres into an auto feeder unit, aligning the fibres to obtain a predetermined sheet density, mechanically interlocking the fibres by needle punching to form the needle felt coir substrate, spraying a polymer onto the substrate, and hot pressing the polymer-coated substrate to facilitate polymer impregnation and fibre-to-fibre bonding, thereby producing a mechanically reinforced needle felt coir polymer composite suitable for geotechnical and pavement reinforcement applications.
