Abstract: The present invention relates to a natural fiber based absorbent article and method of preparation thereof. The absorbent article comprises a fluid permeable top sheet, a fluid impermeable back sheet, and a biodegradable absorbent core disposed there between. The absorbent core comprises 50–90 w/w % water hyacinth pulp and 10–50 w/w % wood pulp, offering superior fluid absorption, retention and biodegradability. The free swell capacity of the absorbent core ranges between 19-29 g/g. The method of preparation of the absorbent articles includes blending of pulp, shaping the pulp to form core using pneumatic technology, and assembling the article components. The article may be sterilized for enhanced hygiene and further treated with auxiliary ingredients to provide additional benefits. This cost-effective absorbent article promotes environmental sustainability by utilizing natural fibers, thereby facilitating effective waste management.
