Abstract: This newly developed eco-friendly onion preservation technology utilizes a combination of Cellulose Nanofiber (CNF) coating and Maleic Hydrazide (MH) to extend the shelf life of onions. The CNF is obtained from agricultural waste such as pineapple leaves and onion peels, and thus, this technology is environmentally friendly and cost-effective. This coating is applied on the surface of harvested onions and helps to create a biodegradable barrier which prevents sprouting, growth of fungi, loss of moisture and rotting during storage and transportation. Maleic Hydrazide acts as an inhibitor of sprouting while the CNF is used as a barrier against moisture and harmful microorganisms. The invention is efficient in reducing post-harvest losses and improving quality and shelf life of onions which allows farmers to store their produce for longer periods and sell at better prices.
