The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.

Abstract: With the increasing demand for improved food quality monitoring and safer consumption practices, especially for highly perishable produce like mushrooms, our project focuses on developing an innovative freshness-indicator system called MycoPatch. This patch is designed to provide a structured and reliable method for the early detection of mushroom spoilage, ensuring enhanced food quality and consumer safety. MycoPatch is a color-changing patch that is attached to mushroom packaging and initially appears green, indicating freshness. As mushrooms begin to spoil, biochemical processes lead to the release of volatile compounds such as ammonia, causing an increase in pH levels within the package. MycoPatch is engineered to respond to these chemical changes by undergoing a visible color transition from green to purple, thereby signaling the onset of spoilage at an early stage. Unlike conventional visual inspection methods, where mushroom spoilage becomes evident only after approximately 70-80% deterioration, MycoPatch enables early detection before significant quality loss occurs. This is particularly important as spoiled mushrooms can support harmful microbial growth and pose potential health risks if consumed. By offering a simple, non-invasive, and easily interpretable visual indicator, MycoPatch helps reduce food waste and enhances consumer awareness. Overall, MycoPatch addresses key challenges in food spoilage monitoring by providing a cost-effective, transparent, and efficient solution. By bridging the gap between invisible biochemical spoilage and visible detection, it promotes safer consumption practices and contributes to improved food safety management.
