Abstract: A vehicle powertrain may have: at least an electric motor; a gear assembly configured to couple at least one wheel of the vehicle to the motor for the at least one wheel to be driven by the electric motor, the gear assembly including a positive contact clutch for switching the gear assembly between at least a first gear ratio and a second gear ratio. An actuator controls the switching of the positive contact clutch. A magnetorheological (MR) fluid clutch apparatus is between the motor and the positive contact clutch, the MR fluid clutch apparatus configured to apply a variable amount of slippage between the motor and a component of the positive contact clutch, during coupling of the positive contact clutch in the switching.
