Abstract: This paper discusses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, which aims to guarantee universal access to sustainable and modern energy by 2030. Specifically, rapid urbanization and energy access demands in smart cities require a decentralized, resilient power system, where integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) such as solar becomes extremely critical. This paper revisits a new efficient interface for PV system integration: Multilevel Inverter (MLI) topology. The system performance was thoroughly assessed in dynamic conditions; more specifically, using varying solar insolation levels (1.0, 0.7, 0.5) – with the former two being considered as acceptable energies/good quality power). The results demonstrated the MLI's capability to generate a stepped AC waveform, amenable to grid injection. A comparative analysis of the output quality based upon the solar insolation revealed a direct relationship with the availability of solar irradiance to Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Outcomes demonstrated the critical need for adaptive control to guarantee energy generation stability and of high-quality power in all ranges of generation. This paper proposes an efficient power electronic, interface solution to enhance transition pathways of reliable RES grid integration, and contribute directly to achieving SDG-7 in future smart city energy systems.
