Abstract: Disclosed is a multifunctional nanocomposite catalyst for upgrading biomass-derived bio-oils into renewable hydrocarbon fuels. The catalyst includes a molybdenum- doped cobalt-zinc ferrite phase containing ferrite nanoparticles, a proton-form ZSM-5 zeolite phase containing acidic and shape-selective catalytic sites, and a wood apple biochar phase providing a porous carbon support. The ferrite nanoparticles are nucleated in situ on respective surfaces of the zeolite phase and the biochar phase, thereby forming distributed ferrite-zeolite-biochar interfacial regions. Redox-active sites of the ferrite phase are positioned adjacent to the acidic and shape-selective catalytic sites within the interfacial regions. Sequential hydrodeoxygenation and hydrocracking of oxygenated compounds in biomass-derived bio-oils are thereby promoted, and conversion toward renewable hydrocarbon fuel fractions is supported.
