Abstract: ABSTRACT “MULTI-STAGE PUMP OR COMPRESSOR” A multi-stage pump or compressor comprises a housing (22) having an inlet port (26) and an outlet port (28), a motor (10), a drive shaft (12), a primary upstream impeller (14) mechanically driven by the drive shaft (12), a fixed non-rotating central support shaft (16) extending through5 downstream stages, and a plurality of freely rotatable downstream impellers (18, 18A, 18B, 18C and 18D) mounted independently on the fixed non- rotating central support shaft (16) by bearing/bush assemblies (20). The motor (10) drives only the primary upstream impeller (14). Fluid discharged from a preceding stage carries momentum, swirl and vortex energy and produces associated hydrodynamic loading upon engaging blades of a next downstream freely rotatable10 impeller, thereby generating tangential blade loading and rotational torque. The downstream freely rotatable impellers rotate successively through cascading fluid- induced rotational coupling. Interstage transfer chambers (24) guide fluid flow between adjacent stages. Static seals (44) together with stage divider walls (46) provide interstage sealing.
