Abstract: A traffic signal preemption system for emergency vehicles includes a UHF sensor module (1) configured to detect an active UHF tag on an approaching emergency vehicle at a first detection range from a traffic intersection, an infrared sensor and camera module (2) configured to visually confirm presence of the emergency vehicle at a second detection range closer to the intersection, an audio sensor module (3) configured to recognize siren frequencies at a third detection range closer to the intersection, a stop-line confirmation sensor (4) configured to verify that the emergency vehicle has crossed the intersection, a central processing unit and controller configured to receive inputs from the sensor modules, initiate signal preemption based on detection by at least one sensor module, and execute a priority algorithm, and a traffic signal control interface configured to control signal states at the intersection.
