MUMBAI, India, Aug. 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641096252 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on August 08, 2026, for Multi-Modal Sensor Fusion Waste Segregation System.

Inventors include K. Tamilarasi; G. Logeswari; Vasundhara Singh; and Avantika Nair.

The application for the patent was published on August 21, 2026, under issue no. 34/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a system (102) and a method (300) for waste segregation. The system (102) includes a housing (124) to receive waste items and a sensor suite (146) disposed within the housing (124) to generate sensor data (130). The sensor suite (146) includes a vision processing unit (104), a weight sensor (106), an odour sensor (108), a thermal sensor (110), a depth sensor (112), a material composition sensor (112A), and an RFID/NFC tag reader. An artificial intelligence (AI) sorting engine (126) operatively coupled to the sensor suite (146) receives and analyzes the sensor data (130) to classify the waste items. An actuator mechanism (134) receives control signals from the AI sorting engine (126) and segregates the classified waste items into designated waste compartments (136, 138, 140, 142). The system (102) facilitates automated waste classification, segregation, monitoring of compartment fill levels, and adaptive waste management operations.
