MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641072281 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 10, 2026, for Multi-Lesion Diabetic Retinopathy Segmentation Using Attention-Guided Skip Connections.
Inventors include S Vinila Jinny; and Kalyana Venkat S.
The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT MULTI-LESION DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SEGMENTATION USING ATTENTION-GUIDED SKIP CONNECTIONS A method for multi-lesion diabetic retinopathy segmentation comprises receiving, by a processor (100), a retinal fundus image (10), and preprocessing the retinal fundus image (10) by performing resizing, intensity normalization, and contrast enhancement to generate a preprocessed image (20). The method comprises extracting, by a residual encoder (200), hierarchical feature representations from the preprocessed image (20) using residual learning blocks to generate multi-scale feature maps (30), and refining the multi- scale feature maps (30) through attention-guided skip connections (300) to highlight lesion-relevant regions while suppressing background information, generating refined feature maps (40). The method comprises reconstructing, by a decoder network (400), high-resolution segmentation maps from the refined feature maps (40), and generating, by a multi-lesion output layer (500), segmentation masks (50) for retinal lesion types. The method comprises optimizing training using an Adaptive Asymmetric Lesion Optimization loss function (600) combining asymmetric Tversky loss with cross-entropy loss.
