Abstract: The Mantis-Shrimp MSV1 is a project designed to solve accessibility issues in recreational tabletop games, specifically Carrom, for people with upper-limb disabilities or amputations. While the primary design focus is on recreating the high-velocity "flick" of a carrom striker using lower-limb input, the technology developed here has significant parallel applications in medical robotics and rehabilitation. Most existing assistive devices are either too slow or lack the dynamic force range required for competitive play. This project outlines the design of a "Digitally Modulated Solenoid Actuation System" that mimics the biological strike of a stomatopod (Mantis Shrimp). The device uses a single-pedal interface where force is loaded via foot depression and released via a thumb-actuated trigger. This decoupling of force generation from the release mechanism allows for high-precision aiming and power control. Uniquely, the MSV1(Mantis Shrimp Variant 1) incorporates a "Bistable Vertical Suspension System"—a mechanical latching mechanism that allows the striking head to retract safely after impact, preventing recoil damage and facilitating smooth positioning. Beyond recreation, the control architecture is designed to be used in neurosurgery for hands-free suction regulation and in physiotherapy for stroke patients to retrain fine motor control in the lower limbs.
