Abstract: Moringa-Mediated Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Herbal Teat Sealant for Mastitis Prevention This invention describes a herbal teat-sealant formulation incorporating green- synthesised zinc oxide nanoparticles for preventing intramammary infection during the dry period of dairy animals. The formulation comprises herbal constituents derived from Ocimum basilicum, Linum usitatissimum and Curcuma longa, together with zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesised using Moringa oleifera leaf extract. The nanoparticles are predominantly spherical to near-spherical and may have dimensions of approximately 40–90 nm, with the nanoparticle-containing formulation comprising approximately 18% zinc oxide nanoparticles. The formulation provides a thick, adherent and peelable barrier capable of remaining associated with the teat region for approximately four to five days while providing localized antimicrobial activity. Application during the dry period reduces exposure of the teat canal to ascending microorganisms, supports favourable post-parturient udder-health parameters, and provides an antibiotic-sparing approach without observable teat irritation or systemic adverse effects.
