Abstract: The invention relates to the testing of a residual current protective device. For this purpose, according to the invention an external monitoring device periodically injects test signals into a sensor circuit of the residual current protective device, and evaluates the response of the residual current protective device to these test signals. The periodically injected test signals may have a signal duration which is shorter than the trip delay of the residual current protective device. Optionally, during an initialisation phase, test signals that have a signal duration longer than the trip delay of the residual current protective device may be injected.
