Abstract: The present invention discloses a molecular clathrate hydrate-based desalination and wastewater treatment system. The method for treating wastewater or seawater using gas hydrate formation comprising various steps such as a) introduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the wastewater or seawater (110), b) formation of CO2 hydrate crystals (120), c) separation of CO2 hydrate crystals from the contaminated water (130), d) melting the CO2 hydrate crystals to recover purified water (140), and e) collection of remaining contaminated or saline water (150). This approach is less energy intensive as it operates at temperatures well above the normal freezing point of water. The invention also discloses a novel design of a molecular sieve-based CO2 hydrate semi-batch reactor for desalination and wastewater treatment. The molecular sieve is a zeolite or silica based molecular sieve. A molecular sieve is the major component to separate the pure water and contaminant water.
