MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621059559 A) filed by Institute Of Technology, Nirma University on May 11, 2026, for Modular Prosthetic Arm With Anthropomorphic Mechanical Design.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a modular prosthetic arm for trans-radial amputees comprising a palm sub-assembly (1a), a forearm sub-assembly (1b), and an elbow support sub-assembly (1c). The palm sub-assembly comprises articulated finger assemblies (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d) and a thumb assembly (3e) connected through joints and pins (7d, 8c, 8d) to provide anthropomorphic gripping. A forearm- mounted actuator system having servo motors, a microcontroller, and a buck converter actuates a bidirectional tendon mechanism in which flexion and retraction strings are routed through guideways (4f, 4g, 4h, 4i, 5f, 5g, 5h, 5i, 5j, 13a, 13b) for active closing and opening without spring-based return. The prosthetic arm further provides wrist rotation through a wrist joint (11g), a breathable socket (2c), and control based on externally acquired command signals, including electroencephalography-derived signals.
