Abstract: A modular laser surgical handpiece (100) includes a handpiece body (102) having a proximal end (118) and a distal end (120) configured to interface with a laser source, a fiber receiver (212) disposed within the handpiece body (102) comprising a tapered cavity directing a fiber ferrule (106) toward an optical axis (O1) and a magnet (206) urging the fiber ferrule (106) into a final seated position against the optical axis (O1), a fiber reader (208) reading an identification tag (210) carried by the fiber ferrule (106), and a laser controller (110) connected to the fiber receiver (212) and the fiber reader (208). The laser controller (110) permits laser emission upon concurrent confirmation of seating of the fiber ferrule (106) by the magnet (206), alignment of the fiber ferrule (106) with the optical axis (O1), and authentication of the identification tag (210) by the fiber reader (208).
