The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a modified bitumen product developed using biochar derived from agricultural waste and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic waste. The biochar is produced through a co-pyrolysis process wherein groundnut shell and LDPE are combined in predetermined weight ratios of 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40 under oxygen-limited thermal conditions. The resulting biochar is processed to obtain a fine particle size of less than 75 microns and is incorporated into a base bitumen binder using high-shear mixing, with biochar dosages ranging from 3% to 15% by weight of bitumen. Storage stability evaluation indicates that biochar content beyond 12% results in phase separation; accordingly, a modified binder containing 12% LDPE-based biochar is identified as the optimum composition. The performance of the optimum modified binder is further evaluated through Marshall mix design of Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM-II), demonstrating a substantial improvement in Marshall stability compared to conventional bitumen.
