Abstract: The motivation behind this project is to reduce vehicle collisions that occur mainly at night at intersections of national highways and village roads. The proposed system uses existing road infrastructure, particularly road reflectors, to create an interactive roadway that guides vehicles entering the major highway from minor roads. A modified road reflector is equipped with a speed-reading sensor that determines the speed of approaching vehicles by measuring the number of tire revolutions within a specific time interval. The sensors are installed approximately 400–500 m ahead of the intersection. The measured tire revolutions are converted into speed in kilometres per hour, and an internal algorithm filters and identifies fast-moving vehicles. Once a high-speed vehicle is detected, the sensor transmits a signal to a variable message signboard positioned at the entrance of the minor road. The signboard provides a warning to approaching vehicles, enabling drivers to anticipate fast- moving highway traffic and thereby reducing the risk of collisions.
