MUMBAI, India, Sept. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641064529 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology Tiruchirappalli on May 21, 2026, for Ml-Based Wrong Turn Violation Detection, Progressive Penalty, And Locally Adaptive Detection System Using Retroreflective Stickers And Cctv Infrastructure.
Inventors include Suriya Ts; Sudharsan S; and Dr. S. P. Ramya.
The application for the patent was published on September 04, 2026, under issue no. 36/2026.
Abstract: A machine learning-based wrong turn violation detection, progressive penalty enforcement, and locally adaptive system is disclosed. The system uniquely repurposes existing retroreflective road stickers embedded in lane markings and stop lines at road junctions as fixed spatial reference coordinates for constructing ALLOWED_ZONE and PROHIBITED_ZONE boundary polygons using the Shapely geometry library — a use absent from all prior art. A CCTV camera delivers a live feed to an edge AI processing unit that, during one-time calibration, applies OpenCV luminance thresholding to a maximum-brightness composite image to detect sticker positions, records their pixel coordinates, and constructs zone boundary polygons stored persistently on the device.. No new road hardware is required; detection is reliable at night and in adverse weather due to retroreflective sticker properties.
