Abstract: ABSTRACT “Mineralogically Anchored Ag-ZnO Heterojunction Cementitious Composites and Methods for the In-Situ Pore-Growth Synthesis Thereof” A surface- integrated, bio-resistant cementitious composite and an in-situ pore-growth synthesis method are disclosed. The composite features an advanced antimicrobial surface architecture formed directly within the hydration pores of a cured cement mortar substrate. Utilizing the substrate's high alkalinity (pH 12–13) and calcium silicate hydrate phases as active reaction platforms, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays are hydrothermally nucleated and grown in-situ, achieving strong mechanical interlocking. Metallic silver (Ag) nanoparticles are subsequently reduced onto the nanorods, establishing a Schottky metal-semiconductor heterojunction. This heterostructure suppresses electron-hole recombination, accelerating reactive oxygen species generation. The surface-confined architecture delivers broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal protection against E. coli and A. niger ( 99% reduction), eliminates biocide leaching, resists UV/mechanical degradation, and preserves bulk concrete mechanical strength.
