Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention discloses a microsponge-based topical gel formulation for the controlled release treatment of truncal acne, comprising salicylic acid encapsulated within porous polymeric microsponges composed of ethyl cellulose, dispersed in a Carbopol 940 gel base. The microsponges are fabricated by the Quasi-Emulsion Solvent Diffusion (QESD) technique, employing dichloromethane as the internal phase solvent and polyvinyl alcohol as the stabilizer, followed by refrigeration, filtration, drying, and sieving. The optimized microsponges exhibit a mean particle size of approximately 110 µm, spherical porous morphology with a mean pore size of 4.2 µm, a production yield of 72.5%, and an entrapment efficiency of 66.6%. The final gel formulation demonstrates a dermal-compatible pH of 6.8, good spreadability, appropriate viscosity, and a sustained drug release profile with approximately 85% cumulative salicylic acid release over 60 minutes. The formulation provides controlled release, enhanced topical retention, reduced skin irritation, and improved patient compliance for the management of truncal acne affecting the chest, back, and shoulders.
