Abstract: A microfluidic flow field assembly with a bifurcated serpentine channel configuration for electrochemical cells and microfluidic mixing devices is disclosed. The flow field assembly includes a planar substrate having an inlet port [1], an outlet port [2], an active area [3] maintained at 50 mm2, and a channel depth maintained at 1 mm. A continuous serpentine flow channel connects the inlet port [1] and outlet port [2] across an electrode plate [4]. The serpentine channel features a plurality of substantially parallel straight channel segments connected by 180-degree turn portions. Each straight channel segment incorporates a series of repeating split-and-recombine cavities containing central, streamlined island structures that bifurcate and recombine the fluid flow. The configuration continuously disrupts boundary layer growth, induces localized fluid mixing, and minimizes reactant concentration gradients, thereby optimizing pressure distribution and species delivery across anode and cathode reactant flows.
