Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for decoding video data. The method generally includes determining a candidate list comprising a plurality of entries for a video block, wherein an entry of the plurality of entries contains one partition split mode indicative of a partiton of the video block into two partitions and two prediction modes for the two partitions respectively, and at least one of the two prediction modes of an entry being accociated with inter-prediction; obtaining template matching costs for different entries of the plurality of entries having different partition split modes and different prediction modes; obtaining a reordered candidate list based on the template matching costs; and determining one entry of the reordered candidate list indicated by an index in a bitstream.
