Abstract: The present technology relates to a method of treating an alkaline liquor comprising methanol and one or more components selected from the group consisting of sulphurous organic compounds, hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia, acetone, alcohols such as ethanol, extractives such as turpentine, and mixtures thereof. The method comprises the steps in temporal order of contacting the liquor with an oxidant, whereby at least a part of the sulphur compounds in the liquor are oxidized to their oxidized forms providing an oxidised liquor, and contacting the oxidised liquor with an acidifying agent, whereby ammonia present in the oxidised liquor reacts to form ammonium sulphate and provide an acidified liquor, essentially free of polymerised terpenes.
