Abstract: The present invention relates to a route-dependent green synthesis method for preparing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using a methanolic extract of Zanthoxylum armatum DC. leaves. A zinc-containing precursor system comprising zinc nitrate hexahydrate, sodium hydroxide, plant extract, and polyethylene glycol is selectively subjected to an uncalcined route, a calcined route, or a hydrothermal route to obtain ZnO(UC), ZnO(C), and ZnO(H), respectively. The processing routes provide distinguishable crystallite size, morphology, oxygen-related defect concentration, charge-transfer behaviour, charge-storage performance, and electrochemical sensing response. ZnO(H) exhibits a hierarchical porous morphology with favourable charge-storage characteristics, whereas ZnO(UC) exhibits comparatively enhanced defect characteristics and electrochemical sensing response toward 4-chlorophenol. The method thereby enables route-selective engineering of ZnO nanoparticles for electrochemical energy-storage and sensing applications.
