Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for synthesizing iron- and nitrogen-co-doped luminescent carbon dots from potato peel biomass for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous media. The method comprises providing waste potato peel biomass as a carbon precursor, combining the biomass with urea as a nitrogen source and ferrous chloride as an iron source in an aqueous medium to obtain a reaction mixture, and subjecting the reaction mixture to hydrothermal treatment in a sealed vessel. The hydrothermal treatment converts the biomass into carbonaceous nanoscale dots and incorporates iron and nitrogen dopants therein. The hydrothermal product is cooled and purified to isolate Fe–N co-doped luminescent carbon dots. In use, the carbon dots contact pollutant-containing aqueous media in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and exhibit Fenton-like catalytic activity to generate reactive oxygen species, including hydroxyl radicals, for degrading industrial dyes and pesticide residues in wastewater for sustainable water treatment applications.
